Sri Lanka has outlined its approach to studying nuclear energy at an International Atomic Energy Agency ministerial conference in Incheon, South Korea.
Science and Technology Minister Professor Chrishantha Abeysena attended with Atomic Energy Board Chairperson Professor Tushara Ratnayake and a delegation. The conference ran from 27 to 29 October.
Assessment continues before any project decision
According to the Government Information Department, the Minister said Sri Lanka was evaluating whether nuclear energy could help meet future power needs within a safe, reliable and affordable system. He placed emphasis on safety, security and safeguards.
The statement describes an assessment and planning process. It does not announce approval to build a nuclear power station. International cooperation and evidence-based decisions were identified as central to determining whether the technology could provide clear benefits for Sri Lanka’s energy future.
