Artificial intelligence should support public needs while remaining subject to human judgement and accountability, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya told a University of Colombo conference.
She attended the opening on 28 October. The two-day event brought together academics, researchers and other participants to consider AI, sustainability and innovation.
Digital skills and accountability emphasised
The Government Information Department reported that her address recognised potential benefits for education, research, public services and economic activity. It also drew attention to inaccurate information, bias, privacy concerns and unequal access.
Digital literacy and responsible adoption were presented as priorities. The Prime Minister called for university research to respond to national needs and for technological opportunities to reach communities fairly. The discussion framed AI development as an institutional and public responsibility alongside its technical possibilities.
