A project to rebuild bridges damaged by the Ditwah disaster began near Bemulla Bridge in Gampaha on 1 November, with grant assistance from China.
The programme covers 14 bridges in two phases. Nine are included in the first phase and five in the second, according to the Ministry of Transport’s account published by the Government Information Department.
Two phases planned for fourteen bridges
China has provided Rs.3,933 million, equivalent to 79 million yuan, for the first phase. Main construction work is scheduled to take 18 months. The implementation agreement was also signed at the launch.
Transport Minister Bimal Rathnayake said damage had affected more than 400 locations on the country’s road network. The bridge programme forms part of the wider restoration effort, with safe public transport and the recovery of damaged infrastructure identified as priorities.
