Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage won men’s javelin gold at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, recording 88.55 metres to deliver Sri Lanka’s first gold of the Games.
Rain made conditions difficult for the field. Tharanga opened with 73.53 metres and stood third after three rounds before taking the lead with an 88.33-metre fourth attempt.
Final attempt delivers the winning distance
After an unsuccessful fifth attempt, he improved again in the final round. His 88.55-metre throw secured the title ahead of India’s Yashvir Singh, who took silver with 85.72 metres, and Rohit Yadav, who claimed bronze with 84.35 metres.
Sri Lanka’s Sumedha Ranasinghe finished sixth with 78.08 metres. The result, reported by the Government Information Department on 29 September, highlighted Tharanga’s strong finish after a more modest opening to the competition.
