A first intake of 65 students has joined the Bachelor of Hotel and Resort Management honours programme at the Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management, marking an expansion of its higher education offering.
Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya attended the inaugural ceremony in Colombo on 27 October. The Government Information Department reported that the programme builds on SLITHM’s established role in vocational training for the hospitality sector.
Building skills for the tourism workforce
In her address, the Prime Minister connected tourism growth with the need for skilled employees, capable institutions and professional standards. She also called for more opportunities for women and young people, alongside support for local enterprises.
The launch brought together education officials, industry representatives, academic staff and the families of the inaugural students. The wider policy message was that tourism development should create meaningful employment and bring benefits to communities as well as businesses.
