Plans to develop Ridi Viharaya in Kurunegala as an international Buddhist and spiritual wellness destination were reviewed at the Presidential Secretariat on 3 November.
The project combines tourism development with the preservation of the temple’s historical and cultural identity. Officials discussed meditation, yoga and other spiritual programmes as possible elements of its visitor offering.
Local skills and access form part of the proposal
According to the Government Information Department, the meeting considered an ambition to attract around 5,000 foreign visitors a month through the temple. This remains a planning target. Proposals also included managing the surrounding area as a carbon-free zone, with transport and other services aligned to that objective.
Road connections to nearby attractions, infrastructure and training for local young people were among the practical issues raised. The discussion called for coordinated work by tourism, planning, roads and conservation authorities as the project develops.
