Sri Lanka nursing appointment ceremony — news photograph

Sri Lanka’s health service has recruited 2,819 nursing officers following their completion of a three-year Higher Diploma programme at nursing colleges across the country.

Appointment letters were presented at Temple Trees on 1 November at a ceremony attended by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. The new recruits enter as Grade III nursing officers.

New appointments and senior promotions

The Government Information Department said they would be assigned to hospitals and healthcare institutions administered by the central government and provincial councils. The ceremony also included promotions for 76 Grade I hospital-service nursing officers to the Special Grade.

Health Minister Dr Nalinda Jayatissa discussed efforts to address staffing shortages. He outlined plans to recruit a further 13,000 nursing personnel from 2027 to 2029, subject to the required management-service approval. That future recruitment programme is separate from the appointments completed at this ceremony.
