A Rs.270 million programme to strengthen freshwater fisheries in the Northern Province has begun with measures to protect fish stocks in major tanks.
Under the first phase, barrier nets were supplied to 12 tanks in Vavuniya and Mannar at an investment of Rs.17.5 million. A distribution event was held at the Vavuniya District Secretariat.

The National Aquaculture Development Authority is implementing the project under the Ministry of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources. The Government Information Department said the nets are intended to prevent stocked fingerlings from being washed out when reservoirs overflow during wet weather.
Retaining those fish is expected to support future catches and the incomes of inland fishing communities. Officials and community representatives attended the distribution programme, which forms one part of the broader provincial fisheries initiative.
