An expert committee has been appointed to examine the death of tusker Kavanthissa and recommend improvements to wild elephant welfare and conservation.
The Government Information Department said the death occurred in the Siyambalangamuwa area of Galgamuwa on or around 16 October. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake appointed the committee, chaired by former ministry secretary A.H. Sarath Wijesinghe.
Investigation paired with wider conservation recommendations
Its remit includes examining the immediate and underlying causes of death and whether there were shortcomings in treatment. Those questions are matters for investigation; the announcement does not establish that negligence occurred.
The committee is also tasked with proposing standard procedures for wild elephant welfare and recommendations for a national conservation programme. It may consult local and international specialists and is expected to submit its report within 30 days.
