Reducing losses after fish are landed and improving the incomes of fishing communities were among the priorities raised in a government review of the fisheries sector.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake chaired the discussion on 27 October as officials considered the ministry’s forthcoming budget proposals. The review covered production, consumer prices and the operation of major fisheries facilities.
Production and market systems considered together
According to the Government Information Department, participants examined the Peliyagoda Central Fish Market, the Ceylon Fisheries Corporation and infrastructure needs. Modern vessels for deep-sea fishing, private investment and more sustainable coastal facilities were also discussed.
The review addressed obstacles in fisheries lending and the need for criteria suited to the sector. Aquaculture and land-related problems affecting freshwater fisheries were additional priorities. The emphasis was on practical changes across production, handling, finance and distribution, rather than a single new project.
