Sri Lanka is planning a coordinated national programme around World Water Day, bringing together institutions working on water supply, conservation and resource management.
The Presidential Secretariat and Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat are coordinating the initiative. A planning discussion chaired by Housing, Construction and Water Supply Minister Susil Ranasinghe considered 14 objectives for the programme.
Institutions to coordinate around shared priorities
Priorities include safe drinking water, sanitation, public awareness and protection of rivers, tanks, wetlands and groundwater. The Government Information Department said the programme would also recognise contributions by researchers, professionals and organisations.
Officials considered a main event on 23 March 2027 at Waters Edge in Colombo, together with a celebration week and national exhibition. Proposed committees would examine issues such as water quality, reuse, technology and food security. These arrangements were described as plans under development, rather than a completed programme.
