Sri Lanka’s sports planning is being directed towards two connected aims: improving international athletic performance and encouraging more people to take part in regular physical activity.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake discussed these priorities with officials during a review of youth and sports budget proposals at the Presidential Secretariat on 29 October.
Facilities and community use reviewed together
Projects considered included a National High Performance Centre, a synthetic running track in Anuradhapura and improvements at the Diyagama and Sugathadasa facilities. The discussion also covered research involving sports medicine institutions and universities.
Alongside elite sport, the President called for better use of existing walking paths and sports grounds. The Government Information Department reported that an accurate inventory of facilities was seen as important for planning. The projects described were proposals under review, while broader participation was presented as a continuing public health and community priority.
