Sri Lanka expects US$25 million in FIFA support over four years for football development, the Ministry of Sports said following talks with the sport’s international governing body.
Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage met FIFA President Gianni Infantino in Baku on 26 October. Their discussion covered player development, national and youth teams, and improvements to sporting infrastructure.
Infrastructure and participation are both priorities
The Government Information Department reported plans to strengthen women’s football and the professional skills of coaches and referees. A modern stadium meeting international standards was also discussed.
The ministry outlined an ambition to begin district stadium development and improve around 40 grounds through Football Federation of Sri Lanka member leagues by the end of 2031. The financing was described as expected support, while the infrastructure programme remains a set of development plans requiring implementation.
